Human Powered Submarine Org.
Drive-Train Sub Team
College Freshman Year to Now
I joined this org my freshman year of college. The whole purpose of the org is for a group of students to design, manufacture, assemble, and compete in a human powered submarine. The submarine is not airtight, and the solo pilot inside uses scuba gear to stay underwater. I was apart of the drive-train sub-team. This team worked on the mechanical components of the entire submarine. The pilot powers the submarine by pedaling, which went through a series of gear reductions that arrived at the output. The team was also working on a non-propeller sub that has a tale. This requires a lot more mechanical parts and was something I began to take a big part in. My job on the team was to convert rotational motion into sinusoidal motion whose amplitude could be adjusted. This presented many challenges with everything needing to be water tight and as compact as possible.
